DOTA Summit 10 lined up six teams fighting for the title. Three of them were North American, but none managed to have a strong run in the group stage and they have all been eliminated from the competition.
J.Storm made it earlier this month to the grand finals of NA qualifiers for The International 2019. They lost that battle to Forward Gaming, now turned Newbee. Given their run in the qualifiers for the biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year, J.Storm came to DOTA Summit 9 as one of the NA teams with great potential to claim the tile, but in the group stages here they haven’t won a single series. They registered three draw scores and proceeded to the playoffs in the lower bracket where the only Chinese squad at DOTA Summit 10, Team Serenity took them down 2-1 last night. J.Storm were the first to be eliminated from the competition and the next in line were Beastcoast, who finished third in the TI9 qualifiers.
This time, Michael “ixmike88” Ghannam’s team was eliminated by compLexity Gaming, who are the only NA team to have reached the second round of the lower bracket in the Beyond the Summit house. Their run was stopped, however, by Serenity who smothered all hope for the NA fans. The day ended with the upper bracket finals Alliance versus paiN Gaming, where the Brazilians battled the TI attendees in a thrilling series that went up for more than three hours.
Alliance had a clean game one that allowed them to take the series lead in just 25 minutes, but heading into the second game, paiN were able to hold on for the late-stage scenario and made a comeback around the 45-minute mark. They slowly turned the game in their favor with a beefy Bristleback and a Storm Spirit capable to find the openings and siege opportunity to put his team in an advantageous position in team fights. Game three was another one-hour affair that was lost by Alliance, despite having the gold lead for nearly the entire game. A 20k gold deficit didn’t phase paiN, who once again found the right initiation, this time with a Legion Commander, and pushed Alliance in the lower bracket finals.
paiN Gaming are the first grand finalists at DOTA Summit 10. Their adversaries will be decided today in the lower bracket finals, Team Serenity versus Alliance. The series starts at 10:00 PDT/ 20:00 CET followed by the best of five grand finals.
