Signing Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen from Team SoloMid has turned out to be Cloud9’s smartest off-season move. After admitting to have wasted two years at TSM to achieve absolutely nothing, the Dane has revitalized C9 to become the undisputed leader of the LCS.
Cloud9 currently sit at 6-0, having already beaten several of the league favorites, including Team Liquid and Immortals. They are yet to be tested against old rivals TSM (4-2), but judging by the teams’ performances so far, it’s very likely that Cloud9 continue their undefeated streak.
At the heart of C9’s success has been the aforementioned Danish bot laner. Zven has only one death to his name and at 25/1/47 KDA, he sits at 72.0 KDA ratio — the highest of all players in all major leagues. The only other player who has achieved a KDA ratio that’s even close to Zven’s is JD Gaming’s Lee “LokeN” Dong-wook, who is yet to die in the LPL and sits at 29/0/25 KDA, or 54.0 ratio.
Both LokeN and Zven are far away still from Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon’s still unmatched 104.0 KDA, which he achieved during the LCS 2019 Spring Season, and it’s very possible that neither cross the three-digit threshold. In week 4, Cloud9 are to play both TSM and Evil Geniuses and while EG have not had the best of starts, TSM have recovered from their 0-2 week 1 and are on a four-game win streak. Kasper “Kobbe” Kobberup and Vincent “Biofrost” Wang have had great games, while Sergen “Broken Blade” Çelik has been by far TSM’s best player, showing great proficiency on champions that can dive to delete AD Carries.
Whether Zven matches Chovy’s record, however, is less important than the run has had as a whole. Despite boasting some of the best results of the LCS come Worlds, Cloud9 have long been the bridesmaids and never the bride of the region. Their last championships date back to 2013 and 2014 and since then, C9 have contested — and lost — to either TSM or TL at four separate grand finals.
But if Zven keeps up this form, C9 could easily be looking at a promising entry into the Spring Playoffs and from there who knows — maybe their first ever Mid-Season Invitational.
