Newly launched Battle Royale game Apex Legends launched to more than a decent first day.

Developed by Respawn, creators of the Titanfall series, Apex Legends has been the talk of the esports office the past few days. After news leaked that prominent streamers like Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek and Guy “DrDisrespect” Beahm have been testing the game behind closed doors, the gaming community started buzzing. And yesterday, the game launched.

As most hyped up new games, Apex Legends skyrocketed to become the most watched game on Twitch. According to several Twitch stats trackers, like Sullygnome, TwitchTracker, and TwitchStats, Apex Legends peaked somewhere between 491k and 495k viewers. At the time of this article, it’s still the most watched game on Twitch with 147.5k viewers, good 20,000 ahead of League of Legends.

This is a good number for Respawn’s game, compared to its Battle Royale competitors. On Oct. 12, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 hit a peak of 449,000. For PUBG, it took several months to get close to the 500k mark. The same is true for the current genre leader Fornite, which needed almost a year to get its first big peaks: an 840k in March 2018 and 1.5M in June 2018.

The hype generated by the popular streamers has also led to a large number of sign-ups. According to Respawn CEO Vince Zampella, Apex Legends hit 1 million unique players in under 8 hours.

The question for Apex Legends now is whether it can keep up the pace. Both PUBG and Black Ops 4 are currently on a downward trend and only Fortnite is marking a significant rise.
